Heat Treatment

Heat Treatment

Same material — different properties to suit your application's need

Chemical composition alone does not determine the final properties of a casting; heat treatment is what tunes the metal's internal structure after casting. Through it, the internal stresses caused by uneven cooling rates are relieved (a main cause of part distortion after machining), and hardness and toughness are tuned to the point your application requires — manganese steel, for example, does not give its distinctive properties at all except with correct heat treatment after casting.

What the service includes

  • Stress relief before precision machining
  • Improving machinability of some grades before turning
  • Raising the hardness of heat-treatable material grades
  • The treatment required for manganese (Hadfield) steel after casting

When it is the right choice

  • Parts to be precision-machined where distortion after machining is a concern
  • An application needing higher hardness or toughness than the as-cast condition
  • Materials whose standard properties are not achieved except by treatment (such as manganese steel)

Our execution steps

1

Selecting the cycle

Choosing the treatment cycle according to the material and required properties

2

Controlled heating

Raising the temperature at a planned rate to the required transformation point

3

Cooling

Cooling in the medium and at the rate suited to the target structure

4

Verification

Hardness testing to confirm the required properties are achieved
