Aluminium & Aluminium Alloys

Light weight with natural corrosion resistance

Specialist foundry — Industrial Zone, Abu Zaabal, Qalyubia, Egypt

Standard:EN 1706

The European standard for aluminium castings. The most common casting family is AlSi (aluminium-silicon).

The decisive advantage of aluminium is its strength-to-weight ratio: its density is about one third that of iron. In casting, silicon is the most important element because it greatly improves the fluidity of the molten metal, which is why most casting alloys belong to the AlSi family. Aluminium also forms a protective oxide layer automatically, giving it natural corrosion resistance without coating. As an aluminium foundry, we cast its common alloys for parts where light weight is the priority.

Properties are strongly affected by the heat treatment condition (as-cast or heat treated), and the difference between them is very large. Specifying the treatment condition in the purchase order is no less important than specifying the alloy itself.

Composition is binding and determines both castability and final properties. The silicon content in particular is the basic trade-off: higher means easier casting but more difficult machining.

Advantages

  • •Exceptionally light (about one third the weight of iron)
  • •Natural corrosion resistance without coating
  • •Excellent thermal conductivity
  • •High machinability

Limitations and considerations

  • •Much lower mechanical strength than steel and cast iron
  • •Does not withstand high temperatures
  • •Requires careful casting control to avoid porosity

Data sources and scope

The values above are taken from standard EN 1706 and represent the reference standard limits. The actual properties of any delivery are established by the foundry's analysis and test certificate for that specific heat, and are affected by section thickness, casting conditions and heat treatment. Final material approval for any application is subject to a joint technical review with our engineering team.
